Pita Bread

Pita Bread

The problem with being a bit keen in the kitchen is that you soon get a taste for real food. When you eat something from a packet or a tin, it just doesn’t taste right. Cooking you own food is a self-fulfilling prophecy, the more you do it, the more you want to do it. This pita bread recipe is a case in point. I bought some in a packet from the supermarket and they weren’t very good. So someone piped up and said I should try and make them myself. Well I did, and here is how I did it.

Ingredients

  • 350ml lukewarm water
  • 2 1/2 Tsp instant yeast
  • 2 1/2 Tsp salt
  • 600g bread flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast and salt to the water in a large bowl then mix in the flour until moist. Cover with a loose lid or towel and let rise for 2 hours.
  2. Preheat the oven to 220C.
  3. Before forming a round, dust the surface of the dough with flour and pull off a piece, the size you use depends on how big you want them to be.
  4. Dust the piece with flour and shape it into a ball. Roll the dough into a thin round shape, like a pizza base. Use as much flour as you need to keep the dough off your hands and the pin.
  5. Place the dough on a baking sheet, and bake for 5 to 7 minutes, until lightly browned and puffed up.
  6. Remove from the oven and wrap them in a clean dish towel and set on a rack to keep them soft.
