Apple Crumble

There’s nothing quite as homely as apple crumble. It’s more soul food that doesn’t take forever to make and just brings a smile to your face when you eat. What more does a recipe need?

Ingredients

  • 6 apples, diced
  • 250g caster sugar
  • 200g plain flour
  • 120g butter
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Instructions

  1. Put the apple chunks into a pan, add three quarters of the sugar, the cinnamon stick and cover. Allow to stew gently for half an hour, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon.
  2. Put the apples into a casserole dish and allow to cool.
  3. Preheat the oven to 150 C / gas 2.
  4. Mix the flour, sugar and butter with your fingers in a bowl until it reaches a breadcrumb consistency.
  5. Cover the stewed apples loosely with the crumble topping.
  6. Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown and crunchy.
  7. Serve with ice cream.

If you fancy something different, swap apples for a punnet of forest fruits. It completely changes the character of the dish.
