There’s nothing quite as homely as apple crumble. It’s more soul food that doesn’t take forever to make and just brings a smile to your face when you eat. What more does a recipe need?
Ingredients
- 6 apples, diced
- 250g caster sugar
- 200g plain flour
- 120g butter
- 1 cinnamon stick
Instructions
- Put the apple chunks into a pan, add three quarters of the sugar, the cinnamon stick and cover. Allow to stew gently for half an hour, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon.
- Put the apples into a casserole dish and allow to cool.
- Preheat the oven to 150 C / gas 2.
- Mix the flour, sugar and butter with your fingers in a bowl until it reaches a breadcrumb consistency.
- Cover the stewed apples loosely with the crumble topping.
- Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown and crunchy.
- Serve with ice cream.
If you fancy something different, swap apples for a punnet of forest fruits. It completely changes the character of the dish.
